About the CISRC
The Cancer Information Service (CIS) of the National Cancer Institute provides information about cancer to anyone who calls their toll-free telephone number, 1‑800‑4‑CANCER. This award‑winning service program started in 1975 when the U.S. Congress declared “war” on cancer. During the past 34 years, the CIS has responded to over 11 million calls from cancer patients and survivors, their family members and friends as well as the general public. As the premiere cancer information program in the U.S., the CIS is continually looking for ways to improve the vitally important service it provides to the nation. One strategy to achieve this goal is for the CIS to collaborate in research to test new methods and technologies for providing cancer information to its callers.
Since 1993 a group of nationally recognized scientists has been collaborating with the CIS in this type of research. We call ourselves the “Cancer Information Service Research Consortium”. Our current program of research focuses specifically on callers to the CIS who are newly diagnosed breast or prostate cancer patients, and breast cancer patients who will soon complete or have recently completed their primary treatment for breast cancer. On this website we provide information about these research studies that may help breast and prostate cancer patients learn more about their treatment options and make informed choices about their cancer treatment, as well as helping breast cancer patients prepare for life after cancer treatment.
If you have any questions or concerns about your cancer, we hope you call the CIS 1‑800‑4‑CANCER telephone number. The CIS has helped literally tens-of-thousands of callers just like you as part of their normal service. You may also be eligible to join one of our research studies for newly diagnosed breast or prostate cancer patients or for breast cancer patients post-treatment. Even if you have no questions or concerns about your cancer at the present time, you may still want to call 1‑800‑4‑CANCER to see if you are eligible to join one of these studies. If you are eligible and decide to participate in this research, you will be helping the CIS determine whether these new methods and technologies actually benefit cancer patients and survivors and thus should be added to the CIS standard service program to help future callers just like you. If this unique opportunity to help others and join in our fight against cancer is of interest to you, learn more about these research studies on this website and then call 1‑800‑4‑CANCER today! Thanks for taking a few moments to visit our website.
