Pathways to Recovery After Breast Cancer Treatment
Enrollment for this study is now closed. We are no longer enrolling new participants. Thank you
Pathways to Recovery after Breast Cancer Treatment is a multimedia educational program designed especially for women who have completed or are completing primary treatment for nonmetastatic breast cancer. The end of breast cancer treatment marks a new phase of life for women. During this phase, women have less contact with the medical team, but may continue to have questions about their health and well-being. Our goal in the Pathways to Recovery study is to offer information to help women know what to expect and how to make the most of life after breast cancer treatment.
A person might be eligible for the study if she is completing primary treatments (i.e., surgery, chemotherapy, radiation) for nonmetastatic breast cancer within the next month or has completed treatments fewer than six months ago. Eligible women who take part in the study will be randomly assigned to receive one of three sources of information. A person only needs to call the CIS at 1‑866‑258‑7981 and agree to participate in order to receive either:
- (1) A personalized conversation with a trained Cancer Information Specialist and reading material from the National Cancer Institute tailored for individuals after cancer treatments
- OR
- (2) A personalized conversation with a trained Cancer Information Specialist, reading material from the National Cancer Institute tailored for individuals after cancer treatments, and the Pathways to Recovery after Breast Cancer Treatment CD along with access to a website containing interactive, multimedia versions of the National Cancer Institute information as well as several other features such as a video of women with breast cancer modeling active approaches to life after breast cancer
- OR
- (3) Everything above and a follow-up phone call from a Cancer Information Specialist to address additional questions the participant may pose.
In order to evaluate the added value of a multimedia program and an additional telephone call to usual CIS service (telephone call and print materials), we will conduct follow-up surveys twice by phone after participants receive the materials and the additional telephone call.
As a partner in cancer care, you have the opportunity to make an important contribution to women diagnosed with breast cancer by directing them to the Cancer Information Service at 1‑866‑258‑7981 to learn more about this study.
